Cowboys off to quick start
By WT Staff
The Dallas Cowboys, with outstanding balance on both sides of the ball, are backing up the claims of their fans that they are the preeminent team in the NFC.
So far, the Cowboys have gone 2-0 in their first two games of the preseason, outscoring their opponents 54-30 and establishing a 24-point difference that ranks second only to Green Bay's 39-point margin of success so far. However, the Cowboys have only two turnovers in their two games so far, while the Packers had five alone in their last game.
Quarterback Tony Romo has looked brilliant in his two appearances, going 21-for-29 for 215 yards. The young quarterback, coming off of his first Pro Bowl appearance, has thrown one interception with no touchdowns but that should not worry the Dallas faithful as he has not had a lot of time with wide receivers Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn on the field yet.
Defensively, the Cowboys have shown they will be a force to be reckoned with when they allowed only 204 yards against the highly touted Indianapolis Colts' offense in a 23-10 win at home, and they followed that up by giving up only 35 yards on the ground to a very good Denver running game in last week's 31-20 beating of the Broncos. They have been some complaints that the Cowboys are breaking the unwritten NFL rule of "no blitzing during the preseason", but coach Wade Phillips is new to this team and he wants to see which blitz packages will work during the season and which will not.
If early indications mean anything, Dallas has all the tools and capabilities to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl and attempt to end the AFC's recent dominance.
